We're From The Future

Friday, 8 May 2009 13:56 by Team Elledge

95 years ago, science fiction/adventure author Victor Appleton wrote a book with a title that was most likely viewed as insane by the intellectuals of the time. Paul's assistant, James, stumbled across this very book in a used book store in Madison the other week, and thought it was humorously quaint.  Here is a picture of the book:

(Tom Swift = Genius)

It's a little ironic that this picture of the book was taken with a camera phone.  Isn't it incredible how the progression of time and technology can transform the wildest dreams of fiction authors into an every day reality in less than a century?  We may not have standardized flying cars yet, but we've come a long way in a relatively short period of time.  Think about it; a majority of people walking around on the earth today grew up without the internet or cellular phones.  Now if we don't get a signal on our mobile information devices, we usually feel a bit incomplete and out of touch.

Photography is a technology that has only been around less than two centuries.  In that period of time, it has advanced in unbelievable leaps and bounds, to the point that most people walk around with some form of an image-capture device in their pocket (at the very least, a camera phone).  And - as with pretty much every technology there is - what matters is not the technology that a person has at their disposal, but rather, what they can accomplish with it.  Megapixels are no substitution for imagination.

Paul is loving working on his Facebook once a day series (shot with his camera phone - the power line image is part of it), and it has really inspired everyone in the studio to get creative with our camera phones.  We're having a great time documenting our daily environments with these relatively simple devices.  If you are excited about images you have taken with your mobile device feel free to share them with us!  One of the unique features that we have built into our blog is the ability for people to send us attachments (such as photographs) through our "Contact" section.  We'd love to see what you've been up to!

And speaking of different photography technologies, check out The Impossible Project.  Basically, there is a group that is working to get polaroid film updated and back in production.  Impossible?  They don't think so.  Check it out.

Today Team Elledge went on an outing to FEED for lunch.  Although there was some debate over whether or not sweet tea is awesome (1 vote for "Yes," two votes for "No"), there was a general agreement that FEED is one of our favorite lunch spots in the city (warning: it's cash-only).

Although the forecast for the weekend appears to be pretty nice, we recommend that you take a little bit of time to head indoors and check out Officially Unofficial, curated by our friend Scott Thomas.  The show is open until May 31st, but we know how busy you are, and we'd hate for you to miss this pretty amazing collection of work.

Go Team!

Our multitalented Producer, Leasha, has just had one of her photographs selected by the 33 Collective Gallery for their 5th Annual National Self-Portrait Exhibition!  It will hang at the gallery (located in the Zhou B. Art Center, 1029 W. 35th Street, Chicago, 60609) from May 15 - June 11.  The opening reception will be on Friday, May 15th from 7-10 p.m.  Leasha not only keeps the rest of Team Elledge focused and efficient, but she also finds the time to cook amazing meals, tend a very neat garden and take some amazing photographs.  You can view her work on her website at www.leasha.com.

And speaking of Leasha, she was thrilled that her favorite Moto GP racer - Valentino Rossi - won the Gran Premio De Espana race on Sunday.  Paul was also glad to see Valentino defeat Dani Pedrosa on his home turf, but it stung a little to watch his beloved Team Ducati place 3rd (Casey Stoner) and 15th (Nicky Hayden).  As the season progresses the Leasha/Valentino (Team Fiat Yamaha) and Paul/Casey (Team Ducati Marlboro) rivalry will definitely be heating up in the Elledge studio.  Not to mention how things will get once Nicky Hayden gets on track.  They are both big fans of Nicky (but for arguably different reasons).

Revolver Magazine

If you can get your hands on a copy of the April Revolver magazine you will find one of Paul's pictures in the Visions of Disorder section.  Paul was honored to have his work for the Ministry album Psalm 69 recognized as one of "metal's greatest album covers."  Here at the Elledge studio, we listen to just about every genre of music you can think of, and being recognized for contributing complimentary visual elements to great music is quite an honor.

Finally, we occasionally come across a contemporary artist whose work makes us say, "Gosh, I wish I had thought of that first."  Jay Johnson is one such artist, and we have been enjoying the results of his artistic endeavors.  Click HERE for an interesting 13 minute short about him (but be sure to check out his individual sites listed at the bottom of the page).
